Kitchen Remodeling Tips

If you have grown dissatisfied with your kitchen, you are not alone. Kitchen remodels are the most commonly requested projects for home improvement. Not only does a kitchen remodel add value to your home, it also creates a new and exciting space for your family and loved ones to enjoy. After all, the kitchen is the one room of your house used by each family member, and the place where everyone congregates for meals and to socialize.

Before beginning a remodeling project, here are some tips to make the job more cost-effective and stress-free. Before meeting with your contractor, ask yourself the following questions:

What do you like about your kitchen? The colors? Shape? Ease-of-use? Be specific. The more specific you are, the easier it will be to ensure that you maintain these elements in your new space.

What do you dislike about your kitchen? Do you wish you had more counter space? Do you want more cabinet space or a larger pantry? Do you want energy-efficient appliances? Do you want your kitchen arranged in a manner that makes food preparation and clean-up fast and easy?

Once you have a list of positives and negatives, you can decide which changes you would like to make. After you compile your list, you can start browsing through design magazines to get examples of how you would like your kitchen to look. Do you want stainless steel appliances? Perhaps you would like an updated color scheme? Maybe you would like to replace your tile countertops with marble. Would you like an island in your kitchen?

Another important thing to consider is the workspace in your kitchen. Is your microwave near your stove for quick defrosting? Is your dishwasher located conveniently to your dish storage area? Is the refrigerator centrally located? Each of these questions is directly related to the functionality of your kitchen and should be considered when remodeling.

During the process you should also consider lighting. Do you have adequate lighting now and will you need additional lighting once the changes are made in order to highlight workstations?

Once you have a general design in mind you can begin the really fun part by estimating costs and compromising on current needs verses current wants. Remember that you can add things such as under-counter lighting as time goes by. Take stock of things that must be done while remodeling and those that can be done later. You should also remember that this should be a fun process and do just that, have fun with it. This is your kitchen, after all.
